Etsy Image Size Requirements: The Complete 2026 Guide

Exactly what size your Etsy listing photos need to be — dimensions, file size limits, aspect ratios, mockup resolution, and what happens when you get it wrong.

Etsy has specific image requirements — and violating them either gets your photos rejected outright or silently tanks your listing quality in search. This guide covers exactly what you need: minimum dimensions, maximum file sizes, aspect ratios, and what "2000px minimum" actually means for mockup resolution.

Etsy image requirements at a glance

Here are the hard limits Etsy enforces as of 2026:

  • Minimum dimensions: 2000 × 2000 px (square) or equivalent area. Etsy recommends 2000px on the shortest side.
  • Maximum file size: 20 MB per image
  • Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF (static), WEBP
  • Maximum images per listing: 10 photos + 1 video
  • Recommended aspect ratios: Square (1:1) for thumbnails — though Etsy supports most ratios

The 2000px minimum is a floor, not a target. Images below this threshold are displayed at lower quality in the zoom view and may be downranked in Etsy search. For anything you plan to drive paid traffic to, use 3000px or higher.

What Etsy actually displays — and why it matters

Etsy serves different image sizes to different contexts. Understanding this helps you choose the right output resolution for your mockups.

  • Search thumbnail (570 × 428px): What buyers see in search results. Etsy crops your image to roughly 4:3 and resizes. This is where most first impressions happen.
  • Listing page main image (max 1500 × 1500px displayed): Etsy resizes your image down to fit. Uploading at 3000px+ gives buyers a clean zoom experience without visible compression artifacts.
  • Zoom view (full resolution): Buyers can pan and zoom on desktop. If your image is 2000px and the product shows fine print, it'll look blurry. Use 3000–4000px for detail-heavy products.

Aspect ratios: square vs portrait vs landscape

Etsy supports any aspect ratio, but your choice affects how images display in search thumbnails. Etsy crops thumbnails to roughly 4:3 (landscape) or shows them square depending on the current interface iteration. The safest approach:

  • Square (1:1): Most consistent across all Etsy surfaces. Thumbnails, shop pages, search results all display square images without cropping. Best for most POD categories.
  • Portrait (2:3 or 3:4): Natural fit for wall art, posters, framed prints. Etsy shows portrait images with slight letterboxing in search thumbnails. The full portrait image displays correctly on listing pages.
  • Landscape (4:3 or 16:9): Fine for mugs, cushions, canvases. Can feel cramped in square thumbnail contexts.

For Etsy poster and wall art sellers: use 2:3 portrait mockups at 3000 × 4500px. This matches real-world A-series paper ratios, looks natural in the product context, and gives buyers a clean zoom view.

Mockup resolution: what "2000px minimum" means in practice

If you're using PSD mockup templates to generate your listing images, the resolution of your final output is determined by the PSD canvas size — not the size of the artwork you drop in.

Common pitfalls:

  • PSD canvas too small: A 1000 × 1000px PSD template will produce 1000px output even if you place a 5000px artwork inside it. The canvas is the ceiling.
  • Artwork too low res: If your artwork (the design you're selling) is 800 × 800px and your PSD template has a 3000px canvas, the Smart Object will be upscaled inside the mockup — resulting in visible pixelation on the placed design area.
  • JPEG compression on export: Some mockup tools export JPEG at 80% quality by default. At large sizes this can introduce visible compression in smooth gradients. Export at 90%+ or use PNG for detail-critical products.

The practical target: 3000 × 3000px or 3000 × 4500px PNG or high-quality JPEG for every Etsy listing image. This gives you headroom for zoom, satisfies Etsy's algorithm quality signals, and exports at well under the 20MB file size limit.

File format: JPEG vs PNG

For most mockup images — lifestyle photos, room scenes, flat lays — JPEG at 90–95% quality is the right choice. JPEG compresses photographic content efficiently. A 3000 × 4500px lifestyle mockup JPEG at 90% quality typically lands between 2–6 MB — well under Etsy's 20 MB limit.

Use PNG when:

  • Your mockup has a transparent background (e.g., a product on white that you want to keep crisp)
  • The design has hard edges, text, or flat colour areas where JPEG compression artefacts would show
  • You're uploading a digital download preview where buyers will zoom into typography

PNG files are larger — a 3000 × 4500px PNG can be 8–15 MB for a flat graphic, 15–25 MB for a full-colour scene. If your PNG exceeds 20 MB, switch to JPEG at 92%+ quality.

The video slot: dimensions and length

Etsy allows one video per listing. Requirements:

  • Minimum resolution: 1080 × 1080px (square) or 1080 × 1920px (vertical)
  • Aspect ratios supported: 1:1, 4:5, 9:16
  • Length: 5–15 seconds
  • Format: MP4 or MOV
  • Max file size: 100 MB

A 10-second slideshow MP4 at 1080 × 1080px typically lands at 5–15 MB — well within limits. Tools like PSDmate generate slideshow videos directly from your rendered mockup set, so you can fulfil the video slot without any video editing.

Quick checklist before uploading

Etsy image upload checklist:

  • Shortest side is ≥ 2000px (aim for 3000px+)
  • File size is under 20 MB
  • Format is JPEG (photos) or PNG (graphics/transparency)
  • Aspect ratio is square (1:1) or portrait (2:3) for POD wall art
  • JPEG quality is 90%+ if exporting from Photoshop/mockup tool
  • Cover image (photo 1) is the scroll-stopper — lifestyle, not white background
  • At least 7 photos uploaded
  • Video slot filled (even a simple 10-second slideshow)

Bulk mockup generation at the right resolution

If you're generating mockups at scale — 10+ PSD templates per design — manually checking resolution on every output is impractical. The fastest approach: use a bulk mockup tool that handles resolution consistently across your entire template library.

PSDmate renders mockups at your PSD canvas resolution (typically 3000–4000px) and exports PNG or JPEG — the output is always Etsy-ready. Drop your artwork, start the job, and download a ZIP of all frames. No per-frame resolution checks required.
