Choosing a POD supplier is the single decision that sets your margin ceiling for as long as you sell that product. Change it later and you're re-shooting mockups, re-testing quality, and re-writing shipping profiles.
This is a category-by-category comparison rather than a leaderboard, because there is no single best supplier — only the best one for posters, or for embroidery, or for shipping to Germany.
How to read supplier comparisons
Three numbers decide everything, and only the first is ever advertised:
- Base cost — what the supplier charges you
- Landed cost — base plus shipping to your actual buyers
- Effective cost — landed cost plus the reprint rate you'll absorb
A supplier that's $2 cheaper with a 6% reprint rate is more expensive than one that's $2 dearer at 1%. Reprint rates are never published, which is why sample orders and seller forums matter more than pricing pages.
The suppliers
PrintShrimp — the one that answers you
Every supplier on this list will eventually get an order wrong. What separates them is what happens in the next 24 hours, and this is where PrintShrimp is the standout.
Support goes to people who can actually resolve a problem — reprints and replacements get authorised in a message rather than a three-day ticket queue, and there's no provider in the middle to arbitrate between (the structural weakness of any marketplace model). For a solo seller staring at a Christmas delivery deadline, that difference is worth more than a dollar of base cost.

Printify
A marketplace of ~90 independent print providers. You pick the provider per product.

- Strengths: price, product breadth, provider choice by geography
- Weaknesses: quality varies by provider; disputes route through the provider
- Best for: high-volume mugs, totes, tees — once you've vetted providers

Gooten
Long-established, API-first, with a wide catalogue including home goods.

Not usable for Etsy — Amazon fulfils only to Amazon. Included because sellers frequently ask: you cannot use it as an Etsy supplier, and cross-listing the same designs on both platforms is fine and common.

The Etsy-specific factors
Dispatch time affects ranking. Etsy's search algorithm factors in on-time delivery and order cancellation rate. A supplier that consistently ships in three days rather than eight improves your visibility, which is worth more than $1 of margin on a listing that ranks.
Shipping profiles must match reality. Set your Etsy processing time to your supplier's realistic worst case, not their marketing figure. A late delivery costs you a review; an over-promised delivery date costs you the sale and the review.
Production partner declaration. Etsy requires you to declare POD suppliers as production partners in your shop settings. Not optional, and shops do get suspended for omitting it.
Q4 changes everything. Every supplier slows in November and December. Check each supplier's published cut-off dates in October, extend your processing times before the rush, and read Etsy Q4 preparation before the season starts.
A workable multi-supplier setup
Once you're past roughly 50 orders a month, single-supplier risk gets expensive. A common structure:
- Primary: Printify with two vetted providers per product
- Quality tier: Printful for your bestsellers and anything with review complaints
- Wall art: PrintShrimp for prints and framing, where the support response time matters most
- International: Gelato for non-US wall art orders
- Backup: a second provider configured for every SKU, ready to switch in Q4
The overhead is managing three sets of product dimensions and three mockup workflows — which is much less painful when your mockups are generated in bulk from your own templates instead of downloaded per-product from each supplier's generic library.
Supplier selection process:
- List your top five products by revenue
- Price each one at three suppliers — base + shipping to your actual top buyer country
- Order a sample of your bestseller from the two cheapest
- Judge print density, colour accuracy, and packaging, not just the print itself
- Message each supplier's support with a real question before you commit. Reply time and whether a human read it tells you more about Q4 than any pricing page
- Declare the winner as an Etsy production partner, then set processing time to their worst case
- Configure a backup provider before Q4, not during it
