Every POD comparison article says the same thing: "Printful has better quality, Printify has better prices." That's true and almost useless. What decides your outcome is which one is cheaper for the specific products you sell, in the country your buyers live in.
Here's the version that affects your bank balance.
The structural difference
Printful owns and operates its fulfilment centres. One company, one quality standard, one set of shipping times. Pricing is what it is because you're paying for that control.
Printify is a marketplace of independent print providers. You choose the provider per product — Monster Digital, SwiftPOD, Dimona, Print Geek, and dozens more. Prices vary widely between them, and so does quality.
That single distinction explains everything downstream. Printful is predictable. Printify is cheaper if you do the work of selecting providers, and inconsistent if you don't.
Real cost comparison (base costs, 2026)
Prices move, so treat these as ratios rather than gospel:
| Product | Printful | Printify (mid-tier provider) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unisex tee (Bella+Canvas 3001) | ~$13.25 | ~$9.50 | ~28% cheaper |
| 11oz mug | ~$8.95 | ~$5.60 | ~37% cheaper |
| Poster 18×24" | ~$14.50 | ~$10.20 | ~30% cheaper |
| Hoodie (Gildan 18500) | ~$24.50 | ~$18.90 | ~23% cheaper |
| Tote bag | ~$12.95 | ~$8.75 | ~32% cheaper |
Printify wins base cost on essentially every category. But base cost is not landed cost.
Where the difference disappears
Shipping. Printful's shipping is often lower and more predictable, particularly for multi-item orders. Printify's shipping depends entirely on which provider you picked and where they're located. A cheap provider three time zones from your buyer can erase the entire base-cost advantage.
Reprints and refunds. Printful eats the cost of its own errors quickly and with little argument. Printify handles disputes through the provider, which means more back-and-forth and, occasionally, you absorbing a reprint to protect an Etsy review.
Subscription. Printify Premium is ~$29/month for roughly 20% off base costs. Worth it above about 30 orders a month; a straight loss below that. Printful's Growth plan works similarly.
Once you add shipping and a realistic 2–4% reprint rate, Printify's advantage on a typical tee shrinks from ~28% to roughly 12–18%. Still real. Not the number the comparison tables imply.
Quality, honestly
Printful's print quality is more consistent, not necessarily better at its best. A good Printify provider (SwiftPOD and Monster Digital both get consistent seller praise) matches Printful on DTG output.
The risk with Printify isn't bad quality — it's variable quality. Provider A prints your design perfectly for six months, then their queue backs up in Q4 and your customers get a lighter print and a nine-day delay. Printful's Q4 also slows, but you're told about it centrally.
Practical mitigation: order samples from two Printify providers before committing, and set a backup provider for every product in your catalogue.
Shipping times to key markets
| Destination | Printful (avg) | Printify (avg, US provider) |
|---|---|---|
| US domestic | 3–6 days | 3–8 days |
| UK | 4–8 days (EU facility) | 6–14 days |
| EU | 4–8 days (EU facility) | 6–14 days |
| Australia | 8–14 days | 10–20 days |
If a meaningful share of your buyers are outside the US, Printful's European fulfilment is a genuine competitive advantage — and Etsy's search ranking rewards fast, on-time delivery.
Which wins per category
- T-shirts and apparel: Printify, if you vet providers. The margin gap is large enough to matter and DTG quality is comparable.
- Mugs and drinkware: Printify. Big cost gap, low quality variance — a mug is a mug.
- Posters and wall art: Close. Printful's paper stock is noticeably better; if you sell premium art prints, that shows up in reviews. See wall art mockups for how to present either.
- Embroidery: Printful, clearly. Embroidery is where provider variance hurts most.
- All-over print / cut-and-sew: Printful. Complex production, and you want one accountable party.
- UK/EU-heavy shops: Printful, or Printify with a specifically European provider selected.
The margin maths you should actually run
Take your top-selling listing and compute:
Profit = Sale price
− POD base cost
− POD shipping
− Etsy listing fee ($0.20)
− Etsy transaction fee (6.5% of sale + shipping)
− Payment processing (~3% + $0.25, region-dependent)
− Offsite Ads (0%, 12% or 15% when applicable)
Run it for both providers with real numbers rather than base costs. Full walkthrough in Etsy fees explained and print-on-demand profit margins.
If the difference is under about $1.50 per unit, choose Printful and buy the reliability. Above $2.50 per unit, the volume case for Printify is hard to argue with.
Can you use both?
Yes, and many established shops do — Printful for apparel and anything customers complain about, Printify for high-volume, low-risk items like mugs and totes. Both integrate with Etsy directly, and both let you keep one listing per product.
The overhead is real, though: two dashboards, two sets of mockup dimensions, two support processes. Don't split until one of them is actively costing you money.
The part neither provider fixes
Whichever you choose, your listing photos come from mockups, and mockup quality determines whether anyone reaches the product at all. Both platforms supply generic mockups — the same generic mockups every other seller on that platform uses.
Rendering your designs through your own PSD templates is what stops your listings from looking like a Printify catalogue page.
Decision shortcut:
- Under 30 orders/month → Printful (reliability beats margin at low volume)
- Over 30 orders/month, US buyers, apparel or mugs → Printify + Premium
- UK/EU buyer base → Printful, or Printify with an EU provider locked in
- Embroidery or all-over print → Printful, no debate
- Whichever you pick — order a sample before you list. Every time.
